Roy Lucas, Jr. Owner and President of the New England Surge, has a very soft spot in his heart for Worcester, MA. Raised in the heart of Worcester, Lucas attended St. Peter Marian excelling in sports and then transferred to graduate from Burncoat High School. His love for sports earned him the high school recognition as a 3-sport standout, as well as a Telegram & Gazette All Star, and many more accolades as a young teenager in Worcester. Roy attended Bethel University, in St. Paul, Minnesota and was also recognized as a 4-sport standout, excelling in football, where he served as the team's receiver, played basketball and baseball and also participated on the University's track team. After graduation he was even invited to try out as a free agent for the Dallas Cowboys, which was to be one of many stops in his journey of tossing around the pigskin throughout the different stages of his evolution. His last football playing experience prior to returning to the East Coast was for the Pueblo Crusaders, a Pro-developmental Football League in Pueblo, Colorado.
Lucas had no intention to become the president of a professional indoor football team. He was merely out searching various areas for turf for the young athletes he was training to be able to continue their practice during the winter months. But when Lucas stumbled upon the opportunity to bring professional indoor football back to the Worcester area, he grabbed it.
Lucas has often approached and overcome obstacles by setting small and achievable goals for himself along the way, whether the challenge was helping others get in shape or owning a football team. Roy strategically pulled together talented individuals with strong local New England ties to serve as the team's Senior Management. Lucas also surrounded himself with an impressive group of local coaches, including Jerry Snay (Coach and teacher of Worcester's South HS) serving as Offensive coordinator, Pat Haverty (Fireman by day and former coach of Fitchburg State football team) serving as Defensive Coordinator and Dennis Faulkner, (Social Worker for DSS Fitchburg by day) serving as the Player Relations Coach. Between them they built a top line player roster that includes local high school and college all stars as well as NFL and professional talent as well. In addition, the Surge Cheerleaders, the PowerSurge, spices everyone on or off the field with motivational, high energy cheers that spike the adrenalin. Roy's vision is watching his New England Surge gain even greater success. "I wouldn't be involved with it unless we believed that someday we could hold a trophy over our heads and say, ‘Here you are New England. Here you are Worcester. Currently the Surge are holding the seat for 2nd place in the Atlantic Division of the CIFL.
