Review
Kevin Henkes writes about Chrysanthemum, a spirited little girl who loves her name. She loves how her name looks, on a crayon, in icing on her cake, and ink on the envelope. She loves how her name sounds when her mother wakes her up in the morning, her father calls her for dinner and she whispers it in the mirror. Chrysanthemum thinks her name is perfect. UNTIL, she goes to school and her classmates laugh when her name is called. Now she suddenly realizes that her name is different and her classmates make fun of it. They tease her because she was named after a flower. Chrysanthemum wants to change her name to something ordinary. UNTIL, Mrs. Twinkle, the beloved music teacher, tells them that she is also named after a flower, Delphinium. She also tells them that the baby she is expecting might be named Chrysanthemum, too. Now everyone wants to be named after a flower, and Chrysanthemum thinks her name is perfect once again. Chrysanthemum is a great lesson on teasing and how difficult it can be for children.
